GERIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH
Older individuals tend to have a unique set of problems that come with aging, including onset of dementia, grief over the loss of loved ones, feelings of isolation or lack of purpose, stress over financial issues, fears of illness or death, emotional problems related to health concerns, and problems coping with changes around them. Our geriatric psychiatrists can help patients with these concerns, as well as with mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, which can happen at any age.

We begin by taking a complete history of the patient’s health, family supports, living situation, and general mental status. Tests may be recommended to aid in diagnosis.  We take into consideration a patient’s overall health and emotional state, as well as available social supports.  We consult with the patient’s family to obtain information about the patient and to ensure that the patient understands and is able to follow the treatment plan. We may also recommend resources to help the family if they need assistance to support the patient.  We also often consult with the patient's other providers to determine how other health issues or medications may be affecting the patient’s mental status.

Depending on the needs of the patient, our treatment plan may include medication, psychotherapy, recommendations for life changes, or a combination.
